System Warnings, Power Lines Radar and Windsock

Read the System Warnings list during a recording, and set up the Power Lines Radar and Windsock instruments, including muting a cableway for one flight.

System Warnings, Power Lines Radar and Windsock

This article covers three things you can watch while you record: the System Warnings list, the Power Lines radar and the Windsock. The radar and the windsock are custom instruments. Custom layouts need the Adventurer plan, and the radar also needs power line warnings, which come with Adventurer. See Custom recorder layouts.

System warnings

Gaggle watches four things that can interrupt a recording. When one is wrong, a warning icon appears on the map. Tap it to open System Warnings, which lists each current problem with an explanation.

WarningWhat it means
Internet Connection LostNo internet connection. Air traffic and other internet dependent functions will not work.
Battery LowBattery is below 20%. Charge your device or find a safe place to land.
Battery SaverBattery saver is on. Turn it off so the recording is not interrupted.
GPS Connection LostNo GPS update for 30 seconds. Check that location permissions are on.

The icon is hidden while nothing is wrong. If you add the System Warnings instrument to a custom layout, it shows a warning icon with the number of current warnings, and it is grey when there are none. Tap the instrument to open the list. When nothing is wrong, the list reads All systems go!

Power Lines radar

The Power Lines radar shows power lines, cableways and similar cables around you, as a top-down picture with you in the centre. A cable is highlighted when your projected course and altitude indicate a possible crossing. Cableway heights are estimates, and some cables may be missing.

Add the radar

  1. Open Record > Recorder Settings > Custom Layouts and edit a layout.
  2. Tap to add a widget and choose Power Lines.
  3. Place it on the grid. It starts at 2 by 2 cells and can grow up to 5 by 5.

Radar settings

Open the instrument’s settings in the layout editor. Under Settings you can change:

  • Maximum distance: how far from you the radar shows cables. Choose from 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 kilometres, shown in your distance unit.
  • Orientation: Heading turns the picture so the way you are flying is at the top. North keeps north at the top.

What the radar tells you

  • If the radar shows No data, Gaggle has no power line data for your position. That does not mean there are no cables. Treat the area as unknown.
  • A quiet radar is not a guarantee. Cables can be missing from the data. Keep looking and keep clear of anything you see.
  • The radar only updates while it is on screen in your layout.

Mute a cableway for this flight

When your course may cross a cableway, a speaker button appears at the right of the radar. Tap it to mute that cableway for the current recording. The button changes to a muted speaker. Tap it again to unmute. The mute lasts for that recording only.

Spoken warnings for power lines are set up in Audio cues.

Windsock

The Windsock instrument shows the wind speed and a windsock that points the way the wind blows. It is in the Wind group of the instrument picker and can be 1 by 1, 2 by 2 or 3 by 3 cells. It shows — until Gaggle has a wind estimate.

In the instrument’s settings you can choose:

  • Wind Direction: Blowing from or Blowing to, which sets what the arrow shows.
  • Orientation: North or Heading. With Heading, the picture turns with the direction you are flying, so you read the wind relative to your track.

The speed uses your speed unit, which you can override for the widget. See Settings reference.
