Competition Flight Screen

Use the competition flight screen, with its map, limited readings and tools, and learn how Reveal my position works and what it costs you.

Competition Flight Screen

When your flight is location masked, Gaggle shows the competition flight screen instead of your normal recording layout. The map fills almost all of the screen. The only readings are what a pilot may carry into the air, so nothing depends on your position.

Masking hides your position from you and from outside services. Spectators following in Gaggle still see you live. On competition devices the organisers switch masking on or off for the whole event. See Competitions.

What is on the screen

  • Readings along the top: GPS altitude, climb rate and the time of day.
  • Zoom buttons on the right edge.
  • Tools along the bottom, each on its own card. A tool shows only when the flight has it.
  • A scale bar at the bottom right.

Tap a tool to open its panel above the tool bar. Only one panel is open at a time. Tap the tool again to close it.

Tools

  • Photos: the course photos with their finder. See Course Photos.
  • Stopwatch: tap the time to start it and to record laps. The arrow next to it, or a long press on the time, opens the Stopwatch panel with Lap, Stop, Start and Reset. Hold Reset to clear the times, so a tap cannot wipe them.
  • Measure distance: measure on the map.
  • Add annotation: draw a note on the course map, only for yourself.
  • Calculator: works out distance, time or speed from the other two, in your units. Use measured takes the distance you measured on the map.
  • More: Stop Recording, and Reveal my position while you are in the air.

Stop the recording

  1. Tap More.
  2. Tap Stop Recording.
  3. Confirm in the sheet.

Reveal my position

Use this if you are lost and need to see where you are. It ends your scoring attempt. You may be penalised. Nothing you fly after the reveal scores, and by default the whole flight is penalised. The organisers can change the penalty in the championship setup.

After you reveal, your position is no longer hidden, the recording continues, and the screen shows the way to the nearest airfield of the course. If the course has no airfield, it shows the way to your take-off.

  1. Tap More.
  2. Tap Reveal my position. You can also tap it in the Stop Recording sheet.
  3. Read the warning. Tap Not now to cancel, or I understand to go on.
  4. Hold the button until it completes. It counts down Hold for 10 s. Let go to cancel.

Gaggle stores the exact moment the hold completes. After that, More shows Position revealed and you cannot reveal again for this recording.

Reveal my position is offered only on a masked flight, once the recording has started and you are in the air. After you reveal, the Seen here button for course photos is no longer available.
